Local Saturday - The Beauty of Food

Some photos from today's farmer's market in Binghamton, New York.

Kohlrabi.  This is a member of the brassica family and these are not roots but are a cultivar of cabbage.  The word comes from the German for "cabbage turnip".
Not quite mature onions.

Beets.  Red beets aren't my favorite, but, aren't these pretty?

Strawberries.  What is finer (for those not allergic to them) but a freshly picked strawberry?  Alas, due to local weather conditions, the quality has not been the best.  But one day I will try a "strawberry healthycake".

And a surprise.  I suspect these spears of asparagus aren't local due to the time of year, but we bought some, anyway, as they looked so good. (Alas, our market is no longer a 100% produced locally market). They were under a tent, and its color tinted the picture purplish.

Do you have a favorite thing to buy at a farmer's market?  Or, would you visit one just for the atmosphere?

  1. I love this time of year when everything is ripe to perfection! I could become a vegetarian if it was like this all year. Nah, but I would definitely eat more veggies!

  2. Beautiful veggies. I can attest that nothing is more beautiful or tastes better than vegetables you've grown in your own garden. It's been a very good year for the veggies in my garden.

    1. I'm happy to hear of your good gardening year, Dorothy. Our garden got started late (our community garden had issues with water leaks and drainage and plumbing must now be replaced) so we are way behind, but we will see what happens down the road.

  4. Our farmers market had the white cherries this time. I held off as the last time I bought cherries they went bad.

  5. I've been visiting the local farmers market regularly and have enjoyed microgreens, strawberries, and more. I'm part of a CSA now and I got my first share. Lots of strawberries, garlic scapes, lettuce... my salads have been scrumptious. I've had delicious omelets, as well. Mmm, fresh vegetables are awesome vegetables.
