Trees in the Sunset #ThursdayTreeLove

A number of the tree lovers who participate in Parul's #ThursdayTreeLove every second and fourth Thursday have been pondering variations of the question "do trees have consciousness?"

There is some evidence that it is possible that trees can communicate with each other through their roots.

I wonder, when I see trees bathed in winter golden hour light, if the trees enjoy the sunset as much as we humans do.  Do they feel the light in some way? Did they see the red light show after a rare winter rain?

Perhaps not in the winter, when our deciduous trees in upstate New York hibernate, but maybe they retain some consciousness.
I wonder if we humans ever will know.

Come back March 14 for more tree loving.

  1. They certainly respond to the sunlight- it's how they contort to achieve the most sun bathing possible.

  3. About 20 or so years ago, I had this thought while driving in the mountains: To the mountains, the trees seem like children.

  5. I doubt we'll ever know in this lifetime, where many question whether other species that actually talk to us are "really" thinking/feeling. Perhaps in another world we'll talk with trees...

Kingsport, Tennessee (near the Other Johnson City) recently identified its "100 Distinguished Trees" visitors should try to see while there. I wonder how/whether that's affected the trees!

  6. Good one Alana. I loved the thought that you shared and the picture is mesmerizing. I think trees do feel and in turn we feel that too. Sometimes I feel trees have a vibe. A subtle one but it is there. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

  7. Oh I'm quite sure trees respond to sunsets and sunrises. They definitely do respond to sunlight ( remember photosynthesis from secondary school? ) This photo is truly magical ....

  9. Liked your tree and your post too.. I believe trees do respond not only to sunlight but also to those around them. I hear people talking lovingly to trees while they prune, cut, water them and literally have conversatons with them.
