The Transition

We aren't ready for the closing credits of summer to roll but we are getting close.  There is a chill to the air here in upstate New York.  The sun is getting weaker, the angle of the sun is changing, and even the local produce is changing.

Changing from this:
Beans

Peppers

Herbs...

to the fall.

Pumpkins

Sweet dumpling squash

Butternut squash

Acorn squash.next to (bottom left) honeynut squash.  We are so fortunate to have this bounty.

The blueberries are gone but the concord grapes are almost in season.

It might be nearly time for a grape pie or two.  They don't sell them locally, but, oh an hour and a half away from here, that's where you find them.  I never did have one last year.

I mourn for summer, and must be dragged, kicking and screaming, into fall each year because I know what happens next.

And what happened to summer, anyway?

Once again, soon enough, I'll be in a fall mood.  But not yet.

What about you? (assuming you live in a climate where a four seasons fall will be happening, or you are preparing to transition into spring.)

  1. I'm not ready for fall, even though I love that season. I want more summer.

  2. {{{Big grin}}} I for one have to go kicking and screaming into summer, I am.not.a.summer.girl. Nope, lol. I am looking forward to the fall season and looking forward as well to the bountiful pumpkins, smiles.

The nights here in Hornell are chilly but the days are still quite humid/warm. Although, I have to say, it is quite nice. One more week of 90*, according to the Weather Channel, then it goes south, smiles.

  3. Your produce is wonderful. Living in desert climes, our falls are puny, but I'll enjoy yours.

  4. We seem to be just starting to have summer right now. The last two months were mild compared with previous years But we don't really have seasons here in LA. It would be nice, though.

  5. Your produce looks amazing ... and yes I'm craving corn in the cob ... but just love the proliferation of veg and fruit at this time of year ... and I too prefer the warmer months - cheers Hilary

  6. Our autumn is always brief and usually doesn't start until late October when the heat begins to relent. I always look forward to it as possibly my favorite time of year.

  8. Here in my neck of the woods in TN, the weather has cooled off and I've noticed a few trees starting to turn, along with plenty of fallen leaves.
Never heard of grape pie, but it sounds delicious, especially if its made from concord grapes!

  9. What a clever way to follow the seasons: through the Farmer's Market bins! And now I'm hungry...

  10. A chill in the air? Lucky! We're getting a heat wave. 90s the next week. Which is pretty typical for this time of year, actually. Sigh.
