It's time to don my rock n'roll mourning clothes once again, as a music great entered The Great Gig in the Sky yesterday.
Mike Nesmith, singer/guitarist/songwriter for the Monkees, passed away yesterday at the age of 78 from heart failure. The death was not unexpected by people close to him.
He was loved by all Monkees fans.
Fun fact, his mother invented Liquid Paper, the liquid that made the life of office typists like me more bearable before the invention of computers and easy corrections. I would never go back to the days of typewriters, carbon paper and correction fluid.
Another fun fact, Mike originated the idea for the first music video program, something called Pop Clips, which eventually morphed into MTV.
Another venture was Elephant Parts, designed to be a collection of skits and music videos, back before their was a home for them.
Today, let's listen to a small selection of Mike Nesmith or Monkees songs.
Different Drum, written by Nesmith in 1964, covered famously by Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys.
A Medley of Mike Nesmith songs.
The rest of these are Monkees songs featuring Mike.
Daydream Believer, from 1968, written by John Stewart of the Kingston Trio and later covered by Ann Murray.
Pleasant Valley Sunday, from 1967 (this song was co written by Carole King).
RIP, Mike Nesmith.
I'll have one more song by the Monkees on my Monday Music Moves Me post. Join me then for some more good music!
Liquid Paper! I didn't know that! I remember my friend's birthday, we were in 7th grade. She got a bunch of The Monkees albums. Then, of course, they had their TV show, which I watched. I didn't have any records though. I like the Smash Mouth version of I'm a Believer.
ReplyDeleteI am grieving with you. A reminder of our age... Carol C
ReplyDeleteYou know I am devastated. My memorial will appear on Monday. And in keeping with the blog hop theme, it will include holiday music.
ReplyDeleteSo many good memories of watching their Saturday show! Love their music.
ReplyDeleteSo sad. Mike was my favourite!
ReplyDeleteHe wore beanies all the time before that became the thing. So sad to hear of his passing.
