White Bird #WordlessWednesday

At a bird feeder at our local Wild Birds Unlimited store in the Southern Tier of New York,  I saw a little collection of birds this past October 28 underneath their bird feeders.

Among them was a white pigeon.

Same picture, cropped more.

It's hard to see, but the bird did not have red eyes. So, it's not an albino. In fact, I'm not sure if this is a white rock pigeon or a white dove.  I looked online, and these birds symbolize peace and love.

I've seen white and brown pigeons before (including one I saw all the time in downtown Binghamton, New York for a couple of years) but this was a special sight to me.

We all could use some more peace and love in our lives, couldn't we?

  5. In high school I had pigeons for a time. A classmate had them. One female was nearly white, white with just one small black spot. Jenny. Chester was the male, and of course they laid eggs! I let the first two hatch. Oh, what ugly babies, you can see the seed they were fed through their skin! When I took later eggs away, she would just lay more, so I ended up hard boiling them and letting her sit on those! They were a lot of work. I think my father was mad I got rid of them fairly soon (finding a good home), he'd built a nice enclosure for them. They are pretty birds. Not native to us.

  9. Lovely photos. Our friends who farm about a mile from us had 5 or 6 white pigeons arrive maybe 30 years ago, now they have 40+ who stay there all the time. They have free pickings in the grain store so why would they want to leave! They are not albinos either. I used to think they were doves but he said they are pigeons.
