The winners of the 2022 Scarecrow contest have been announced. I've blogged about the contest several times over the years, and this year there were more entrants than ever. I'd like to ask that you scroll to the end before you go because one of these winners has a backstory.
The Winner - Face the Sunshine. Broome DDSO Riverside Art Program
Second Place - Venus "Crow" Trap. Team DSS
Third Place - Bubble Bubble I'm in Trouble. Berkshire Farm Center & Services for Youth
Fourth Place - America’s Past Time. Smith
Almost all of these were entered by non-profit groups. But, for the fifth place prize, this never should have been an entry. Aliza Spencer should be alive and well and enjoying life as a 7th grader at East Middle School in Binghamton instead of being a victim of violence being paid tribute to by a scarecrow erected by friends.
As of today, no arrests have been made. On October 31, at a neighborhood memorial, candy was left for Halloween in her memory. A billboard has been erected to try to get the investigation some leads.
This is #WordlessWednesday and indeed, there are no words. May Aliza rest in peace. And may my next post be happier.
Joining Sandee at Comedy Plus for her #WordlessWednesday.
Unfortunately there are many stories of this kind. The rules sometimes are not functional. Sad and alarming situations.
ReplyDeleteMay Aliza rest in peace!
...justice seems elusive these days.
ReplyDeleteYou’re right, there are no words …
ReplyDeleteThe whimsical side of me loves the Venus Crow Trap. It is indeed sad that we are moved to memorialize a tragic event in the hope that justice will be served. Have a blessed week.
ReplyDeleteI have no words either. Such injustice happening to so many innocents.
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. Big hug. ♥

This past week has been one where there were shootings and murders all over the country! Poor family. Scarecrows were so much fun, back in the day. In my 3rd gr. classroom, I went to the local pumpkin and corn farms, and gathered some corn stalks, put them on a bulletin board, and tacked up the scarecrow, made with my son's worn out clothes.
ReplyDeleteBreaks my heart in two. I'm so sad about this. And all the other horrible stories in our world/ Carol C
ReplyDeleteVery sad story. And all too common lately.
ReplyDeleteLove the winners of the competitions. Eye openers :)
ReplyDeleteIt is very tragic.
ReplyDeleteWhat a tragedy!
ReplyDeleteFabulous scarecrows! How tragic when a child's death needs to be showcased. Bless Aliza's family who are suffering...
