Local Saturday - The Long Slog

It's so easy to become depressed on a blah Saturday in upstate New York.

It's cloudy.  We've had snow flurries on and off all day.

It's full of slush.  Cars are coated with crusty white briny road yuck.  Piles of snow lie everywhere.

I thought about putting some kitchen scraps in my compost bin, but when I looked at my back yard, I changed my mind.   The compost bin is barely visible in the top middle next to the fence, mostly buried.  Perhaps I should run a contest to see how many readers can find it.

This was what my son's car thermometer showed on his way to work yesterday. -27F works out to about -32.7 C.

But then I thought back to just yesterday, when it was so cold, and my spouse volunteered to take me to work.

I stepped outside, and there was the sunrise. No, this is not photoshopped.
And then, on the way to work, the sun made its appearance.

We are far from seeing the end of winter. Our forecast for the next few days is not encouraging.  It's going to be a long slog to spring.

Today, we are doing a seed inventory, having ordered our two community gardening plots.  Then, we'll see what we want to buy or order for our garden.

As for the weather- I will always remember that sunrise.

  2. Ugh and there is only more snow on the way. Hang in there and we'll be tending our gardens before we know it. :) That is a beautiful sunrise!

    1. Trying to hang on, but we are in a 5 to 8 inch snowfall area for tonight, with the addition of ice. If we don't get the ice, we will get 8 to 12 inches. It will all depend on how this storm moves. Continuing to plan my garden.

  4. Beautiful sunrise. You scored there! Ordering seeds when it's cold and snowy outside is so much fun, thought, isn't it? The anticipation of what's to come. You'll make it. It will be here before you know it. Take care!

    1. More snow (and maybe ice) tonight, so counting the days and being grateful I don't live in Boston.

    1. More snow tonight and tomorrow. The sunrise tomorrow will be invisible! But many places have it worse than us.

    1. Some times of the year just have beautiful sunrises and sunsets. This is one of them. Must be the angle of the sun. Tomorrow, in a middle of a snowstorm, I don't expect to see much of the sun.

  7. Oh my. Now THAT is snowy. We have had some snow, but nothing like this.

My daughter has been telling me funny stories about how she doesn't know if she can bear to wear the "ugly boots" that everybody wears in NYC at this time of year. But she thinks she is going to have to break down.

I did find the compost bin, by the way.

    1. She will have no choice but to wear the ugly boots. I love my Totes boots - ugly but they stay watertight - so important when the slush and puddles appear.

  8. There's something about the light at this time of year. Here in England, there's a pink rosy quality, which hints at spring. Buds are swelling on the roses outside my study window, some have even kept a few leaves because the winter has been so mild.

  9. -32.7 C is damn too cold. I cannot even imagine how it would feel like at such a temperature. The sunrise photographs present a very enchanting view. The bright light over the whites everywhere would have been so soothing. I hope the spring knocks over at your place soon.

  11. There have been some lovely sunrises and sunsets lately. Not sure what all we're going to get tonight and tomorrow, but I am pretty certain my kids will not be going to school tomorrow! (It will be snow day #10 for the year! Sigh . . ) But! After the slog, comes the spring!
