Fall Fancies - Is It Winter Yet?

This is our five day forecast here in upstate New York.

61F (16 C) by Sunday?   Our unbelievable fall continues, but the end is near.

This past Sunday, though, many people were out enjoying the unseasonable weather.
A sumac seedhead stands tall.  That's normal.
But this isn't. A small sapling's leaves are at peak.  In December.

A forsythia blooming.  This particular forsythia, on the trailhead of the Vestal Rail Trail, blooms every fall.  But in December?
The grass is still green.
And the stems are red.

One thing you aren't seeing (because my iPhone camera isn't that good) is the blue jays who were flying around today on this trail, screeching from their perches high in trees.  Normally, at this time of year, you don't hear much from birds.

It's like a dream.

The Mamas and the Papas once sang of California Dreamin'.  But now, perhaps it's time for Californians to do some New York dreaming for a change.

Still, we worry and wonder:  when will Nature change and give us a horrible winter to make up for what is going on here?  After all, Nature has its ways of balancing the weather.  There is a price to pay.  Almost.

But maybe, just maybe...we paid that price last year?

For now...we are New York dreamin' indeed.  More later in the week.

Have you been experiencing unusual weather?

  1. It has been especially warm in Florida for this time of the year. On Halloween we were dripping sweat (it's usually comfortable), and Thanksgiving day I still had the AC running full blast. It finally got down to 60 at night for the first time all year, and whew! I forgot what that feels like. *shivers*

    1. I lived in Florida years ago. It was so strange to have leaves stay on the trees but I didn't miss the snow. The first year I was there I wondered why they sold winter coats. The second year, I knew.

  2. Winter? What's Winter? LOL! In LA... Winter doesn't really exist and I am totally okay with that as I had to deal with brutal winters when I was growing up. I am going to be rudely awakened in a few weeks though when I go to colder states/countries! ha!

  3. We're in the 70s here again today and that's expected to continue for at least the next week. Our first frost is going to be late this year.

    1. I am starting to get concerned about how nature will even this weather out. I hope we have a spring.

  4. Last year Ohio was hit with some extreme weather conditions. I am not sure if it will happen again this year or not. I have heard some say we will have a mild weather, where others says it will be harsh. Only time will tell.
