Peeps Oreos - Yea or Nay?

I don't know if Oreos are "America's favorite cookie" but if not, it must be close.

When I was growing up, there was only one type of Oreo.  And, they weren't even kosher.  Or vegan.

Now, things are different.

In March of 2012, I blogged about Oreos, then celebrating its 100th birthday.   But before you read that post, take a look at Oreo's latest United States flavor.

I posted this picture on Facebook, seconds after seeing it in a supermarket, and it created quite a lively discussion.

Now, it's your turn:

Peeps Oreos - Yea or Nay?

As I have some readers outside the United States, a quick explanation - Peeps are marshmallow candies shaped into various animal shapes.  They started out shaped as chicks and sold for the Easter holiday.  Now, their products have greatly expanded.  People who love them, love them.

I am not a fan, meaning I am probably un-American.  Although, I see they come in chocolate now....

Note, since this post was written, the maker of Oreos in the U.S. has changed - now, it is made by Nabisco division of Mondelēz International.

Now, here's one of my Oreo posts, from previous years.  I still think Oreo should create an International Sampler.  What do you think?

Happy 100th Birthday to My Favorite Cookie

I could say "my favorite cookie" is my spouse's aunt, who turned 100 back in January, but she isn't.  Although, she is barely older than a famous cookie, which turned 100 today.

Yes, the Oreo.

You Tube has a wonderful video on Facebook for its fans - fireworks in China.  It's a "private" video so I can't share it.

I never thought of International Oreos, but they are all over the world.  So I won't explain to my readers what Oreos are, except that when I grew up there was only one kind - one flavor.  Chocolate cookies with vanilla cream. That's it.

Now, of course, you find regular, chocolate, peanut butter, mint, Double Stuf, Golden Oreos, double delight Oreos that are both regular and golden, fudge covered, Oreos with ice cream stuffing.....

In the United States, our Oreos are made by Kraft Foods.  Which leads to a puzzling thing:  if you live in the United States, go into your food store and look at the various flavors.  Some are made here.  Some are made in Canada.  I wonder why.

I can kick myself for missing the Birthday Cake Oreo, which I saw in the store, and didn't jump on.  Now I know why they had that flavor....(note from 2017 - I've had that flavor since - and don't like it).

And now, as a birthday gift to their fans, I propose that Oreo create an International Sampler.  Why?  If you look at the list of flavors that have been sold in other countries, some of them sound very interesting:

Blueberry ice cream, lemon ice, orange/mango, dulce de leche, and my favorite, sold in Canada but only sold here for a few months back in 2010...so why not?

Oreo?  Please?

  1. One of the bloggers I follow used to live in Japan and did an interesting post on the flavors they sell there. I'll pass on all flavors. Frankly, I really do not care much for packaged cookies at all.

    1. I don't care much for packaged cookies, either, except for traditional Oreos and nutter butters. Oh yes, and the Bisco sugar wafers.

  2. I love Oreos - the chocolate kind. Had no idea there were more flavours. They're quite popular here, though a little on the expensive side.

  3. No to peep Oreos. Peeps are only good for Peep contests.

  4. I can't eat Oreos, but the idea of Peeps Oreos appears to me. "Flavor of the month" has worked for other junkfood manufacturers; can't blame Oreos for trying it too...

    1. No, you can't blame them for wanting to participate in "limited edition". I still wish they would bring back the strawberry Oreos from around 2007.

  5. My grandmother always bought Hydrox cookies. Same type of cookie s the Oreo -- chocolate cookies with a vanilla creme filling. But Hydrox were made by Sunshine Biscuits, and my grandmother had worked for Sunshine Biscuits when she was younger. Hydrox were on the market 4 years before Oreos, but when Sunshine Biscuit was sold to Keebler in the 90's, Hydrox were discontinued. Hydrox were kosher, Oreos were not, another selling point for my grandmother.

    1. I grew up with Hydrox cookies - my Mom kept kosher. But, after she died, my Dad did not care one way or the other, and I was able to bring Oreos into the house. I'm sorry to know, though, that the Hydrox were discontinued. I didn't like them as much because they didn't have as much creme filling - or at least that's what my memory of them is like.

  6. I used to love peeps as a kid, but now I don't care for them much. Oreos I am a fan of the original but haven't been adventurous enough to try anything other than maybe double stuffed!

    1. The only limited edition I've truly liked was the strawberry Oreos - not at all like the berry ones. I still like the original ones the best.

  8. Call me old-fashioned but anything other than the traditional Oreo just isn't an Oreo. I mean even the Double Stuffed is a different cookie. Also, Peeps are a perfect candy why mess them up with a perfect cookie?

  9. I love Peeps and I love Oreos, but Peeps Oreos? Gross!

Remember Hydrox cookies? Like Oreos, but crunchier and not quite as much filling. I really liked those.

    1. I certainly remember Hydrox; in fact, in my preteen childhood that's all we had in the house. I was sad (see comment above) to learn that Hydrox were discontinued years ago.
