The Mid 1970's Need More Cowbell #MusicMovesMe #Blogboost

I feel nostalgic today so I am going to play some songs that bring back memories for me.  I love the 80's, but I find the 70's are a close second.

Today is Monday, and that means it is time for Music Moves Me. Our honorary conductor of the month, Michelle (Naila Moon), has decreed we have a "freebie" this week, so we can pick whatever music we wish.

Who are the #MusicMovesMe bloggers? We are headed by our head Engineer XmasDolly.  Her co-conductors are:  Callie of JAmerican Spice, (who right now is visiting when she can - please keep her in your thoughts ) and ♥Stacy of Stacy Uncorked♥   Also, co-conducting is  Cathy from Curious as a Cathy   And, finally, me.

So, what about today's nostalgia?  I'm choosing the 1975-1976 period, a period that brings back a lot of memories for me.

Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac: This song reminds me of my early days as a military "dependent", when my spouse went active duty in the Air Force.  Released in 1975, for some reason I associate this song more with 1976, which is also when this live performance was taped.  Rolling Stone magazine even did an article about this performance - in 2015.  Better late than never, I say.

Year of the Cat - Al Stewart.  This is the title song of his 1976 album.  I just love the lyrics, which make me remember some long distance car trips this song made easier.

Someone Saved My Life Tonight - Elton John.  I can still sing almost all the lyrics to this one without help.  This live performance is from 1976.

Blinded by the Light -  Manford Mann's Earth Band, with probably the most misunderstood lyrics of any rock song, ever.

(Don't Fear) The Reaper - I remember living in Wichita Falls, Texas (my spouse's first duty station) and my first experiences with insanely hot summers.  I hesitated a little in posting this because of the belief of many that this song is a glamorization of suicide, something the group Blue Oyster Cult denies.

Several years ago, I was fortunate to be able to see Blue Oyster Cult and their performance was amazing.

And speaking of amazing - I can't hear (Don't Fear) The Reaper without thinking of of what may be the best Saturday Night Live skit of all time - More Cowbell. (I hope this link plays; I had a hard time finding this) I've got a fever and this skit is the prescription!.

We are having a somewhat unusual them next week - see you then.

  1. Great choices! I was a teen in the 70’s, this was “our” music.

  2. Fleetwood Mac are the sound track to my late teens Alana - I can see my old boyfriend in my head whenever I hear any of the Rumours album. And BTW I now have Blinded by the Light stuck in my head!

  3. Ah, my last year living in Ann Arbor! Such memories. And, yearslater moving to Alexandria- which is from where much of Fleetwood Mac began (and lived while i was here- with their self-titled speakeasy.)

  4. With the possible exception of "Rhiannon," these are all great songs. 75-79 were my college years and the time of my courtship and marriage, so they were good times.

  8. I understand what you mean about the hesitation.
This Saturday while doing the weekly house cleaning, the radio was supposedly playing 80s and 90s songs but I swear many were in the 2000s. But music goes well with hard work eh :)
    Thanks for the dance.
    Aloha

  9. Alana,

Your mid-70s mewsic choices are linked to many far away but fond memories from my teen years. I had a major heartbreak in '76 but I'm thankful for it because if it weren't for that heartbreak then my heart wouldn't have found the true love my life - DH. :) Thanks for transporting me back to the 70s era briefly and man, am I am glad I am where I am now even if I am a lot older. lol Have a boogietastic week, my friend! ;)

  10. Ahh, Alana, what a great set here! I remember when I first heard Rhiannon, sitting on the floor with a few friends in one of their bedrooms, pouring over the album cover and liner notes and listening intently to the entire album...but playing Rhiannon over and over. And then fighting about who had the "right" to name their baby girl Rhiannon. Well, we never had to worry about that: I never had kids and Cricket had two boys. haha

My heart skipped a beat when Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat" started playing! OMG, I love that song! and I haven't heard it in so long it seems. I'm listening to it again right now... Musically this song is just fantastic!

Wichita Falls, huh? So you know what I'm dealing with right now, with the temperature hitting 107 today (or maybe that was yesterday). It doesn't matter, 107, 105, 101, it's all frickin' HOT! I can't stand it and I swear to God, every damn day I find myself saying "I don't know why I ever moved to this state!" And now you know how, now more than ever, I sooo want to be back in Niagara Falls... Yearn, yearn, yearn...

Re: Blue Oyster Cult: I saw them too, when they were touring with Black Sabbath. It was dubbed the "Black and Blue Tour", with BOC opening for Black Sabbath. Well, it was the general consensus of all of us who went to that show, Blue Oyster Cult blew Black Sabbath out of the water! They were far superior and should've been the headliner, in our opinion. It didn't help that Black Sabbath took an OUTRAGEOUSLY long time to come on stage. The crowd was first growing restless, and then irritated, and then just kinda pissed because it was ridiculous making us wait that long. So by the time they hit the stage, the concert excitement mood had already faded...
Regardless, Blue Oyster Cult was amazing! I'm so glad I got to see them in concert.

And I saw Elton John twice too. Once in Washington DC and once in Austin. Both times he had the audience in utter awe. Stunning performer.

"Blinded by the light, wrapped up like a douche..." Yep, remember that one! I can't even hear that song without thinking about that.
It's right up there with CCR's "there's a bathroom on the right..." haha

Thanks for a great set of tunes, all of which made me smile. I miss home, I miss those days, and I so wanna go back-- to both!

    Have a great week,
