Have a Drink on Me #MusicMovesMe

It's Monday and I welcome you to #MusicMovesMe.

Who are the #MusicMovesMe bloggers? Every other week we have a theme, and on alternate weeks, we can blog about any music we wish.  We are headed by our head Engineer XmasDolly, who is recovering from surgery.  Her co-conductors are:  Callie of JAmerican Spice, (who is recovering from surgery) and ♥Stacy of Stacy Uncorked♥   Also, co-conducting  is  Cathy from Curious as a Cathy (currently filling in as the temporary head Engineer and guess what? She's recovering...yup.)   And, (last but not least), there's - me.

This month, our Guest Conductor is Marry Burris of Jingle Jangle Jungle and her theme for today is "Songs with Beverages in the title."

<!-- end LinkyTools script —> Our rules here are simple:
We really want to boogie with you, so please keep in mind that this is a blog hop and open to music posts ONLY!

If you do have music to share, you are welcome to link up above. We'd love to hear from you!

The very first song that popped into my head was a song from my childhood:  Tea for Two.  The version I remember was sung by Doris Day.  I never knew it came from a movie she made in 1950.

Tea for Two - Doris Day.  This movie was a reworking of a Broadway play much older than I am.
The song "Tea for Two" comes from a Broadway show, No No Nanette, dating from 1925. To give you the flavor of the original, this is Tea for Two - Ben Selvin's Dance Orchestra from 1925, with some wonderful period pictures in the video.

Another Cup of Coffee - Mike and the Mechanics, tells the story of a woman whose husband has left her.  What's there to do but drink another cup of coffee?

Cool Water - cover of a famed Western song, done by Frankie Lane, 1955.

A couple of wine songs:

Elderberry Wine - Elton John, 1972.

One of my favorite groups from the 1960's - Sweet Cherry Wine, by Tommy James and the Shondells.  Little did I know then that the reference to sweet cherry wine was not to sweet cherry wine.  But, I will include it under "wine" anyway.

Red, Red Wine - UB40

Moving on to the hard stuff: A Rum Tale - Procul Harum.

BONUS: This is tretching things a little because you should never drink untreated sea water, but I am selecting, as my final song "Beyond the Sea" by Bobby Darin (born Walden Robert Cassotto).  Bobby Darin went to the same high school (graduated the year after I was born) as I did. His heart was damaged by rheumatic fever he contracted as a child, and he felt (correctly, it turned out) that he would not lead a long life due to his damaged heart.  He died, never waking up after heart surgery, at the age of 37.

Enjoy the week!  I'll be back with more music next Monday, same time, same place.

  1. Alana,

I love Doris Day's voice - so soft and feminine! I almost used "Tea For Two" today but went a different direction. However, I did go with Mike & the Mechanics "Another Cup of Coffee" which was new-to-me, so I was surprised to find it here. I know, what rock did come out of? :) "Elderberry Wine" & "Sweet Cherry Wine" bring back memories - excellent songs! How cool is that Bobby Darin went to the same high school as you!! Holy smoke, I didn't know that he died due to complications from heart surgery at such a young age. I've heard of rheumatic fever but know little about it. That sounds scary but illnesses of the past often were, though. Thank God we live in such progressive times! Thanks for sharing the dance floor with me, my friend. Have a boogietastic week! ;)

  2. Well, this is a little embarrassing. Elton John is one of my all time favorite artists, I probably have seven of his albums and I am sure that I have played Elderberry Wine on numerous occasions, but I forgot all about it for today's theme. Back when there were nearly NO crossover music, Cool Water was a country hit by Marty Robins and I almost included it in my post. Thanks for sharing some great tunes.

  4. So, so many good ones here today! And I couldn't get a single one to play! We're in the mountains and I'm blaming it on poor WiFi. But now I have Tea for Two in my head! That's almost as good! ;)

  5. Good choices here! Especially high marks for "Sweet Cherry Wine," one that I missed.

  6. How funny is it that we titled our posts almost identical? And here's some further irony - My original intent was to post songs about coffee and tea! In the end, I went with different drinks, but it just shows that great minds think alike :) This was a really fun post!

  7. Dying from heart surgery before one is forty. Now that is really sobering. (No drinking pun intended.)

  8. You can never go wrong with Doris Day! :) Love all your song choices, particularly 'Red Red Wine', of course! ;) Thanks for the awesome dance - hope you're having a great weekend! :)

  9. Hi Alana,
Well it's Sunday night and I'm finally getting back to making my rounds from Monday's posts. Sorry to be so late! Hope you had a great Labor Day Weekend. One more day. I'm actually looking forward to Tuesday to get a little break. All but 2 of my dog boarders will be going home tomorrow (Monday) evening and it will be nice to get some rest! (speaking of: I didn't have time to do a new post for this Monday's 4M but I'll be back next week. I need to get caught up on much neglected work from this past week).

I like the songs you picked for the beverage theme. I especially loved seeing the period pics from the 1925 orchestra. Very fun!
LOVE Mike and the Mechanics' "Another Cup of Coffee"! I had a "Coffee Bar" playlist in my post and I wish I had thought of this Mike and the Mechanic song! So good!
Great wine songs too. We picked the same ones. I so love Elton John's Elderberry Wine. That's probably my favorite here and my second favorite (of the wine songs) is Sweet Cherry Wine by Tommy James. Thanks for including that link. I didn't realize the "sweet cherry wine" in the song is referring to the blood of Jesus. Cool fun fact there!

Your bonus song is wonderful. I remember hearing the song but didn't realize it was by Bobby Darrin. I also didn't know that he died so very young. Wow, 37. Sad. To think the music he would've been able to leave for us had he not succombed to the effects of that childhood affliction.

I enjoyed your song picks. See you in a week or so...
    Enjoy your holiday tomorrow!
