1981 Music #MusicMovesMe

Whew!  We have a lot to cover today!

Who are the #MusicMovesMe bloggers? We are bloggers who blog about music each Monday and if you have music to share with us, you are most welcome to join! (Music Posts Only , please!)   First, there is XmasDolly, who hopefully will be join us this week.  Her co-hosts are: Stacy of Stacy Uncorked, Cathy from Curious as a Cathy, and me.

Each month we have a guest conductor.  For the month of May, let's welcome John from The Sound of One Hand Typing (who is also one of the bloggers who organizes the Blogging from A to Z Challenge).  Welcome to May, John!

John's theme for today is "You Pick".

I can't believe that the 1980's were 40 years ago.  Sometimes, to me, it was like only yesterday.  Let's take a short tour through 1981 today.

Blondie - Rapture.  The album this came from was released in 1980 and this was released as the second single from the album in early 1981.  This song is the first #1 charted single in the United States to feature rap vocals, and its video was the first featuring rap to be shown on MTV.

Kim Carnes - Betty Davis Eyes.  This song is a cover of a 1974 song co-written and sung by Jackie DeShannon.  Hmmm, this could be the start of a Battle of the Bands, but I need to stick to 1981.  I do like the Kim Carnes arrangement better, but the original is well deserving of a listen, too.

Stevie Nicks - Edge of 17, from her debut solo album.  Stevie Nicks wrote this song to express her grief for the death of an uncle and John Lennon's death at the hands of a "fan", both occuring in the same week.

Queen and David Bowie - Under Pressure was released as a single in 1981 and later included in a 1982 album release by Queen.

Here's my final song for today:  "Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go", Soft Cell's cover of two songs from 1964, Gloria Jones' "Tainted Love" and the Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go". (Despite the title on this album, these two songs are suitable for this blog.)

And that's a wrap!

Before I sign off, I invite you to come back tomorrow for my A to Z Retrospective post.

Join me again next week, same time, same place, for another episode of Music Moves Me.  And join me later today for my Blogging from A to Z Retrospective Post.

  9. Alana,

The decades flicker out like a light bulb, unless they are LEDs then they last a long while but truly the 80s was like yesterday, right? The 80s gave us some fantastic music and you shared some great ones on the dance floor today, darlin'! I'll swing by tomorrow to catch your reflections post. Mine will go up then, too. Have a boogietastic week!
