Deep Purple and Red #SkywatchFriday

What a tragic storm Hurricane/tropical storm Ida turned out to be.

We (Southern Tier of New York) were on the fringe of the storm.  We only got about an inch of rain.  But we know a number of people (friends/family) in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and downstate New York.  My heart sank when I saw people in the city a cousin lives in undergoing deep water rescues, but he is OK.  Relieved!

Tuesday night at sunset there wasn't much of a clue as to what was about to happen. What was about to happen was the remnants of Hurricane Ida about to make life in the Northeast United States a misery for many.

When the sun went down Wednesday (after a day of rain from what was left of Ida), I was distracted but happened to look out the window and saw red.  Red as in the aftermath of a spectacular sunset.

I was barefoot but grabbed my iPhone SE 1st edition anyway, and ran out into the street.

Everything was glowing red.

For some reason, the iPhone picked up the red as purple when I photographed the sky.

My spouse, from the porch, yelled, "Look at your arms!"  I did, and I saw this.  I quickly took an arm selfie, concerned that the light would change.  This time, my phone picked up the red.

There was a red hot poker (Kniphofia), a flower in my front yard, and it was glowing.  Again, the phone didn't capture quite what I was seeing (upper middle of picture).  It's not a great picture but you can see why one of its nicknames is Torch Lily.  And to its right, you see the ground glowing in red.

Since then, I've seen a couple of pictures of that sunset. Once again I missed a spectacular sunset.

Better luck next time.

  1. ...I would have liked to have picked up a bit of rain from the storm.

    1. The sky was red and there was red light everywhere, like we lived under a red sun. The iPhone picked it up as purple when I photographed the sky, but picked up the red when I photographed my arm.

  3. Wow, even though it was red, the purple sky still looked majestic! But what a storm! Glad your cousin was okay and you guys didn't get a lot of rain/damage!

  5. During tornado season here, sometimes we get that strange red that turns purple in the iphones colors. Very spooky. Who'd of thought that Ida would be so deadly so far from landfall?

  6. We've had some thunder storms here lately, fortunately not anywhere near what Ida has brought. I don't love the storms but I do love the look of the sky.

  7. Greetings and Salutations! RED and more RED and more RED. You were seeing miracles. I guess, the Iphone isn't cracked up to being top notch at colors. It thinks purple is RED. So funny! Be safe.

  8. Alana,

I guess the sensor couldn't process the intense red. Sometimes digital cameras & apps do crazy things. The pictures are still very neat and interesting. Have a funtastic weekend, my dear!

  13. It's a pretty purple, anyway. I think there's a filter/correction that the iPhones do as a matter of course to all pictures. I seem to recall that there's a way to undo that, but I don't remember where I heard that or how it's done.
