Watch Out! #WordlessWednesday

Trees are usually our friends.  But not always.

Spouse and I decided to take a walk Friday on a shady street in Binghamton, New York.  It's on a street which was grand at one time and it retains that name:  Grand Boulevard.  In some ways, it still is.  It's lined with a number of beautiful trees, many of them basswoods (lindens).  The sidewalks are wider than the usual Binghamton sidewalks and many are made from slabs of slate.

Near one end of the street is a park called Brown Park.  It was once a house and this is the tragic story of why it's not a park.

It was (for us) warm and we wanted some shade.

We parked on the street, in front of Brown Park, and took our walk.  The street isn't that long, perhaps three quarters of a mile (1.20 km) long.

What we do is walk on one side of the street (the side with Brown Park) and then, when we come to the end, we cross the street.

We were coming up on where Brown Park and our car was parked when we heard a cracking sound.

Limbs from a tree across the street suddenly were coming down, right where the boulevard (and the sidewalk) ends. (The street you can see in the picture below is the cross street where the boulevard dead ends on one end.) Our car was a few feet away.

Taken perhaps a minute after we heard the sound of branches coming down

I saw the limbs hadn't touched our car nor had they touched another tree.  Fortunately, no one was walking on that sidewalk at that moment.

So why did this happen?

We had a bad snowstorm in late April that took many trees down, and damaged many more.  I wonder if this is what happened to that tree.

Trees are normally a comfort to us.  But not that day.

Still...I love trees.

  1. ...tree companies have a lot of work to do here because of our recent high winds.

  2. That must have been scary.

There used to be a hickory tree in my mother’s back yard. One day my sister was looking out the kitchen window when she heard a loud crack, and the tree …yes, the entire tree …simply fell over. Fortunately it fell away from the house, not toward it.

  5. I'm glad your car didn't get in the mix of those limbs. Lucky you. Also even better news that no one was hurt.

What a sad story about that house that burned down. So sad.

  6. How fortunate no one was sitting under the tree in the shade!

  7. Yikes. I've seen trees in that state before. One when I was out walking a couple Saturdays ago. And there's a tree-lined street that loses huge branches whenever we have a wind storm. It's scary to think what might be under the tree when that happens. (It happened at a school a couple years back--pre pandemic. They then removed the trees as it was a safety hazard for the students.)

  10. I've seen trees drop limbs or blow completely down, but not two limbs in different directions at the same time...wonder what had caused that? Dangerous to anything in their way!
