The Bird Watching Channel #WordlessWednesday

I find myself tuning in more and more to what happens outside my window.  Call it the bird watching channel.  I haven't gotten into feeding birds yet, but that may be coming one day soon if the pandemic continues.

This bird is a male Northern Cardinal, a common bird where I live in the Southern Tier of New York.  But "common" and "I see one right outside my window" are two different things.  I love that flash of red against the snow.

Right before I took these pictures, I saw a female, but couldn't get my cam...I mean, my phone, soon enough to capture it.  For the record, the female Northern Cardinal differs quite a bit in coloring.  There is a female in the second picture, but it was too far away for my old iPhone to capture it.

So much to learn, as long as I watch the Bird Watching Channel.

  1. We put bird food out to attract the squirrels for us dogs to play with in the yard. We used to have a bird feeder outside the window for the cats but the fallen food attracts mice and they started to try to get in the house, so we stopped that. Cardinals are very pretty in their bright red feathers.

  2. I like to watch the birds too. We have peanuts and fat balls in hangers for the smaller birds, and throw out a handful of dry porage oats every day in winter for the bigger birds.

  3. Alana,

We get a lot of cardinal in our back yard. The other day, I spotted two young male and two female cardinals. Like you, I love to see the vivid red of a mature red cardinal against a snowy backdrop. I often fail retrieving my camera in time to snap a shot. I must go for my big girl camera so I can use manual settings in order for the lens to focus on the subject instead of the window screen. That's the reason for my missed opportunities. DH mentioned this morning that New York got 4 feet of snow yesterday. I can't remember where but I'm thinking perhaps south of Buffalo. I'm very thankful warmer weather has returned here. You're going to hate me when I say that yesterday was 65º and sunny. Today's forecast is even warmer. We're expecting rain by Friday which will be with us for several days. I'd say this time next week, our area will show some signs of spring life. We're running a bit behind since it's been such a cold month. Stay warm and be safe, my dear!

  5. Bird watching is fascinating. We feed the birds (and squirrels) and have two heated birdbaths so that they can get water. Cardinals visit daily, as well as wrens, woodpeckers, starlings, goldfinches, doves, nuthatches, chickadees . . . and unfortunately, an occasional predatory hawk or neighborhood cat.

  7. My office window looks out on an assortment of feeders in my yard. Lately, I've been delighted by a flock of bluebirds and a hermit thrush who seems to have lost its way.

  9. One of my favorite sights in the world is that beautiful flash of red, especially against white snow. Beautiful.

  12. I love the Bird Watching Channel! Ours is pretty slow right now. A couple of chickadees and two Blue jays. Even the sparrows seem to have deserted. SO looking forward to the new programming in spring, with purple finches, robins, magpies, crows and the occasional owl!
