Halos and Mare's Tails #SkywatchFriday

I hadn't taken a picture of the sky in a couple of weeks, at least - my eyes were focused on all the spring blooming plants around me, and the occasional snow flurries.  But it's time to get on track with sky photography.

Yesterday spouse and I decided to take a walk on our local Rail Trail, the Vestal Rail Trail.

We parked the car and, as I got out, I saw a halo.

I started to snap pictures as we walked onto the trail.

The clouds looked like a map of islands floating on a deep blue sea.
(The blue dot is something that happens sometimes with cameras called lens flare.)
As we walked on past the halo, my spouse pointed out the mare's tail.  He's an amateur weather person and told me it indicates rain is on the way.  Indeed, it is for later today.

Yesterday it was a breezy day, but the sun was shining, and it was the perfect finish for a day before Skywatch Friday.

  1. ...I rarely see a halo, thanks.

  2. Great pictures. I had never heard mare's tail for cirrus clouds.

  3. Nothing quite so interesting as the sky! These are beautiful! Here, a halo precedes a weather change--usually colder. Mind you any change in the sky around here is a sign of conditions getting colder. Sigh.
P.S. Mare's tails have always been my favourite clouds. So . . . sweepy!

  4. Those halo pictures are so unique. And I too had never heard of a mare's tail (and my dad was a lifelong amateur weather person).

  6. Pretty halo! I don't see them very often at all. There must be a children's book about clouds called Mare's Tails and Mackerel Scales, because whenever I read or hear "Mare's Tails" I have to add in "Mackerel Scales!"

  7. A couple of those almost look like images from space. I don't know if I've seen a halo before.

  8. Hi Alana - love the halo ... I thought it was surrounding the North American continent ... an ephemeral one! The sky always amazes me ... fun shots - cheers Hilary
