Yesterday, I took a picture of what we call a woolly bear caterpillar in my back yard. It's the second one I've seen locally this fall and both looked about the same.
These larvae of the Isabella Tiger Moth (Pyrrharctia isabella) are held by folklore to be predictors of the coming winter.Unlike those of previous years, this one has a larger brown band. That's supposed to mean a milder winter, although science would disagree.
Joining Sandee at Comedy Plus for her #WordlessWednesday.

The caterpillar has a better chance of predicting the weather than the local weather person, imo.
ReplyDeleteUnique photo and info ~ not sure where you live but hope the winter is mild in MA too ~ Hugs ^_^
ReplyDeleteI've not seen one of those in a very long time. So adorable.
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.
Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. Hugs. ♥
You'll see if the prediction is correct. You'll know for the
ReplyDeletenext year! It looks so fluffy...😊
Happy WW, Alana! A fine week ahead!❤️😘
I'll be interested to see if it's true! I know it's an old wives' tale, but still fun. My weather is much warmer than it should be. The 90s should only last a few more days though.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen one yet this Fall, but I usually do and always worry that I'll step on one. My grandson saw one in the grass when he was little, and picked some weeds and grass and told me it was hungry so he was feeding it. He loved seeing it. Was first time for him. I doubt the wolly bear even took a nibble, but he was for sure it was eating. lol
ReplyDeleteI've only seen one!
ReplyDeleteLooks quite fuzzy.
ReplyDeleteLovely photo, Alana!
ReplyDeleteMay you have a mild winter. We, alas, are due for the super El Nino, which means so much rain they're already declaring a state of emergency.
ReplyDeleteAn adorable caterpillar. Perhaps even sweeter than the butterfly itself.
ReplyDeleteBest regards, and I invite you to take a look at my new painting :)
I definitely don't want a wilder winter.
ReplyDeleteHow cute is that?
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've seen one of those - it's lovely!
